Essential oils for Cold Hands

Cold hands are not only a sign that the weather's bitter  -  they could be a symptom of something more serious. There are at least a dozen conditions which cause chronic cold hands, including peripheral vascular disease and ME. But for many, cold hands are a sign they have Raynaud's.

The condition causes the small blood vessels in the fingers, toes, ears and nose to constrict when their temperature drops. Although it's usually worse in the winter, even in warm weather patients can suffer in the slightest temperature drop, such as moving into an air-conditioned atmosphere. During an attack the skin visibly whitens and the area becomes numb or extremely painful. Sufferers often develop sores and patches of hard skin, which makes walking painful; because of poor blood flow their skin is also prone to ulceration and infection.

Even a moment's exposure to the cold can leave sufferers in agonising pain. As Alison Wright, a sufferer, explains: 'Just opening the front door is enough for an attack  -  you feel as if glass is being scrunched in your hands.' 

Nine out of every ten sufferers are female  -  it's thought that oestrogen makes the blood thicker, slowing down its flow in the tiny vessels (the symptoms often first appear with puberty and attacks can be worse at certain times in the monthly cycle, sometimes tailing off after the menopause). 

The severity of the condition varies with the patient.

To immediately warm your hands and feet, you must improve your blood circulation. In order to do so, you can use certain essential oils – especially those made of aromatic herbs: cloves, ginger, black pepper, cinnamon, cardamom, juniper, rosemary, mint, pine, cypress or marjoram essential oils. Thanks to their anti-inflammatory, analgesic, soothing, antibacterial and antiviral properties, these oils can combat many other disorders that occur during winter – especially colds, flu, fatigue, stress, depression, muscle and joint pains, stiff neck or back. In these cases, you can add the oils in the bath water and take a hot bath.

Ointment to Warm Cold Hands

1 cup of Olive Oil

1 cup of Coconut Oil

4 tablespoons of Beeswax

2 drops of black pepper essential oil

Essential oils are mentioned over two hundred times in the New Testament and Old Testament of the Bible.

If you are a beginner to essential oils, there are three primary ways essential oils enter the body: applied to the skin, inhaled, or ingested. When choosing the right method to use essential oils, always keep in mind the desired result you are wanting and then determine the best application for use. Essential oils can enter the body by being applied to the skin. This method can vary from using a compress, gargling, bath or even massage. It requires several drops of essential oils to be used topically in some manner. It is important to note that most essential oils should not be applied directly to the skin without being diluted.

While people inhale and diffuse essential oils for a variety of reasons, it has been shown that inhalation is most effective and best suited to treat a variety of respiratory complaints. Ingestion of essential oils has had much controversy, I suggest you do the proper research yourself and use safe practices. Cases of death, organ failure and hospitalization in the history of aromatherapy have been caused by ingesting essential oils.

It is excellent when included in mouthwash recipes, particularly if you suffer from sore, inflamed gums.

While people traditionally see a doctor for an illness and get a prescription drug, many others have awoken to the fact that essential oils can be used in a powerful way, when it comes to healing and supporting the body’s emotional and physical well-being. The biggest question is what oil will work for my body the best. Because we are not all the same, essential oils do not function the same for each of us.
