When thinking about aromatherapy, most people go to great lengths to be sure their essential oils are pure, therapeutic, organic, and so on. Doesn't it make sense that essential oil diffusers should be just as therapeutic as the oils? Otherwise (in some cases), you might as well be pouring the precious drops of gold down the drain.
Atomizing Diffusers are More Effective than Ultrasonic Diffusers
When compared to ultrasonic diffusers, atomizing diffusers are eight times more effective. You may be thinking, “That is wildly preposterous!” Actually, it’s not. Many Diffuser World atomizing diffusers can diffuse essential oils at the rate of one milliliter (1mL) or approximately 20 drops per hour. Using an ultrasonic with a 200 mL reservoir* of water and 20 drops of oil, you would see an oil diffusion rate of 3.3 drops per hour. In this case, the atomizer is six times more effective. However, most ultrasonics recommend 5 to 10 drops of oil per fill. On the high side at 10 drops of oil to 200 mL of water, the oils diffusion rate is 1.7 drops per hour or 12 times less effective. The fact of the matter is ultrasonic diffusers can scent an area with essential oil aroma; however, if you want to control your “dosing” and deliver a therapeutic effect with essential oils, an atomizer is going to be your first tool of choice. *Assumes a six-hour run time.
Atomizing Diffusers Produce 200% More Particles
Atomizing technology disperses 200% or two times more particles than ultrasonic technology. Interestingly, the test doesn’t differentiate between essential oil particles and water vapor. Therefore, the actual amount of essential oil particles produced by ultrasonic technology is far less than two times.
Atomizers are Better at Suspending Essential Oil Particles
Particles produced using atomizing technology stay suspended in the air five times longer that particles produced by ultrasonic units. This means you can deliver pure undiluted essential oils in a room for a short period of time, turn it off and the particles will remain in the air 500% longer than those produced by an Ultrasonic. This is why most Diffuser World atomizers have time awesome timer controls.
Atomizing Diffusers Don't Leave Residue
Our tests and personal experiences show that essential oil residues remain in ultrasonic units upon evaporation of the water. Though not thoroughly tested nor identified, the theory is that some of the essential oil constituents are too heavy to be transported by the water vapor into the air, thus remaining after the water evaporates. So, the full constituent profile of your essential oils are not being broadcast into the air.
